‘Community Dressing’ is a documentary series about the Dutch National Costumes. Theodorus Johannes tries to define the state of contemporary fashion consumption by looking at folkloric costumes.

By focusing on the almost disappeared Dutch costumes and its traditions, standards, values, creation and its passing, a glance of the costumes is being compared to today's fashion system. Various experts, craftsmen and wearers are questioned to answer the following question; How has the current fashion system changed and / or stayed the same relative to costume dressing?

In episode VI we look at Hindeloopen's regional dress and their frequent use of chintz, the Indian hand-painted or hand-printed cotton. Theodoor takes you to the origins of chintz, the trade relationship between the Netherlands and India, and examines what effect it has had on the current fashion system.

‘Community Dressing’ is een reeks documentaire video’s over de Nederlandse streekdrachten. Theodorus Johannes kijkt via de streekdrachten naar de stand van zaken in de hedendaagse mode-consumptie.

Door de bijna verloren Nederlandse streekdrachten centraal te stellen en diens tradities, normen, waarden, totstandkoming en verdwijnen te bevragen, ontstaat een blik vanuit de streekdracht op het hedendaagse modesysteem. Verschillende experts, vakmeesters en draagsters komen aan het woord om antwoord te krijgen op de volgende vraag; Waarin is het huidige modesysteem veranderd en/of hetzelfde ten opzichte van de streekdrachten?

In aflevering VI kijken we naar de streekdracht van Hindeloopen en hun veelvuldige gebruik van sits, de Indiase handgeschilderde of handbedrukte katoen. Theodoor neemt je mee naar de herkomst van sits, de handelsrelatie tussen Nederland en India, en gaat kijken naar wat voor effect die heeft gehad op het huidige modesysteem.

Gieneke Arnolli has written and published her entire career about the use of chintz in Friesland. During our visit she showed her collection of printed textiles with which she gives lectures on chintz. It becomes clear that fashion still draws inspiration from fabrics that are 300 years or older.

Gieneke Arnolli schreef en publiceerde heel haar carrière over sitsen in Friesland. Tijdens ons bezoek liet ze haar collectie van bedrukte textiel zien waarmee ze lezingen geeft over sits. Daarin wordt duidelijk dat mode nog steeds inspiratie put uit stoffen die al 300 jaar of ouder zijn.

Siobhan is an artist and storyteller on the shores of Sri Lanka. She strives to capture emotion and authenticity in whatever she creates in hopes of a portfolio that isn’t simply seen but also resonated with. These are her illustrations of the Hindelooper costume dress.

Siobhan is kunstenaar en storyteller wonend in Sri Lanka. Ze streeft ernaar om emotie en authenticiteit vast te leggen in alles wat ze creëert, in de hoop  een portfolio te vormen dat niet alleen wordt gezien, maar ook weerklank vindt. Dit zijn haar illustraties van het Hindelooper kostuum.

Nathalie Cassée is a collector and expert in hand-printed textiles. In 2020 she opened the Katoendrukkerij in Amersfoort, the specialized workshop for cotton printing in the Netherlands. Nathalie ensured that since October 9 2021, the craft of cotton printing was added to the Inventory of Intangible Heritage in the Netherlands.

Nathalie Cassée is collectioneur en expert in handbedrukte textiel. Anno 2020 runt zijn de Katoendrukkerij in Amersfoort, dé gespecialiseerde werkplaats voor katoendrukken in Nederland. Nathalie zorgde ervoor dat op 9 oktober 2021 het ambacht katoendrukken bijgeschreven in de Inventaris Immaterieel Erfgoed Nederland.

Craftsman Gerard van Oosten grew up in Staphorst and learned the craft of his aunt. Van Oosten uses this background and his professional painting training to maintain and develop the traditional craft of Staphorster Stipwerk. Using modern materials, techniques and applications, he passes the craft on to the next generation.

Meesterstipper Gerard van Oosten groeide op in Staphorst en leerde het stipwerk van zijn tante. Deze achtergrond en zijn professionele schilderopleiding gebruikt Van Oosten om het traditionele ambacht van Staphorster stipwerk te behouden en verder te ontwikkelen. Met behulp van moderne materialen, technieken en toepassingen geeft hij het ambacht door aan de volgende generatie.

How to make urker dikkoek?

Urker dikkoek (‘thick-cake’), also called 'mowers cake', is a very old dish. When Urk was still an island, mowers from the mainland came twice a year to mow Urks meadows. They got to eat dikkoek, because it filled well and laid a good foundation for the heavy work. You could have the cake made by a baker, but many fishermen's wives baked it themselves. In this video you’ll find the recipe of Urker dikkoek.

Urker dikkoek, ook wel 'maaierskoek' genoemd, is een zeer oud gerecht. Toen Urk nog een eiland was, kwamen twee keer per jaar de maaiers van het vasteland over om de Urker weilanden te maaien. Zij kregen dikkoek te eten, omdat het zo goed vulde en een goede basis voor het zware werk legde. Je kon dikkoek bij de bakker laten maken, maar veel vissersvrouwen bakten het zelf. In deze video vind je het recept en werkwijze van Urker dikkoek.

The second episode is all about Marken's regional dress. Formerly an island, Marken was known to flood a few times a year, leading it's inhabitants to work on highly detailed forms of embroidery in their daily wear. Clothing pieces from Marken are far different from the rest of the Dutch National Costumes, making the inhabitants of Marken boldly unique and fiercely independent.

De tweede aflevering staat geheel in het teken van de dracht uit Marken. Het voormalige eiland stond erom bekend een paar keer per jaar te overstromen, wat ertoe leidde dat de bewoners enorm gedetailleerde vormen van borduurwerk in hun kleding verwerkte. De Marker streekdracht verschilt het meest van alle andere klederdrachten in Nederland, wat de uniekheid van de Markers onderstreept en onafhankelijk maakt.

REGIONAL DRESS OF MARKEN EXPLAINED

Because Marken's regional dress requires a vastly detailed  description, the documentary   only explains it's women's dress. This video gives you an idea of how the men and children's dress was been built up. All the different pieces of clothing are described in detail in the book "The Dutch National Costumes", Theodoor Molkenboer's book from 1917. The book is released in the public domain and can be downloaded here (in Dutch):

Omdat de streekdracht van Marken een enorm uitgebreidde en gedetailleerde beschrijving vereist, wordt in de documentaire alleen de dracht van de vrouw behandeld. Deze video geeft je ook een beeld van hoe de dracht van de mannen en kinderen is opgebouwd. Alle verschillende kledingstukken en hoe men zich aankleedt wordt uitvoerig omschreven in het boek "De Nederlandsche Nationale Klederdrachten", het boek van Theodoor Molkenboer uit 1917. In this first episode I went back to my roots, on a quest for the regional costume of Noord Brabant (Southern Netherlands) from the era of the year 1900. Curious how the traditional women's dress of Brabant looked like? With contributions of Gerard Rooijakkers and Ans van den Bosch, we find out what make the women of Brabant so special.

In de eerste aflevering ging ik terug naar mijn roots en onderzocht de modedracht van Noord Brabant van omstreeks het jaar 1900. Ben je benieuwd hoe de Brabantse vrouw er vroeger uit zag? Restaurateur Brabantse poffer hats

For 47 years, Ans van den Bosch developed and rediscovered techniques to ensure her antique collection of traditional hats from Noord Brabant would be preserved into the future.  Up to this day she has been pioneering Brabants' traditions and until her collection has been adopted in 2007, she's been a restaurateur. Her collection is permanently on display at Museum Vekemans in Boxtel. Watch this clip, a recording of her workplace in the 1980's.

Ruim 47 jaar herontdekte  en bewaakte Ans van den Bosch technieken om zeker te zijn dat haar antieke collectie Noord Brabantse mutsen bewaard konden blijven tot ver in de toekomst. Nog altijd is zij een bewaakster van de Brabantse tradities en tot haar collectie in 2007 werd overgenomen was ze restaurateur. Haar collectie is nu permanent te bezichtigen in het Museum Vekemans in Boxtel. Bekijk dit clipje uit de jaren 80 waarin ze geinterviewd wordt op haar werkplek.
