Regional costumes make sure you're part of your group; it’s an expression through which one can see where you come from, what your profession, wealth, religion and sex is. At the same time this traditional costume also creates hierarchical distinction between people. It is a straitjacket, sometimes with limited options.
On the former island of Urk, the Netherlands, the last remaining wearer of it’s regional dress passed away in 2013. This regional dress is no longer being worn on a daily bases. What happens to a regional dress if it has no more authentic wearers? Is it then free to do with it whatever we want, and who decides?
With these outfits, I question the social codes within Urk’s regional dress. By playing with it’s materials, details and context I try to provide a new perspective on identity within Dutch traditions. How would a modern regional costume fit in today’s world?

Streekdracht zorgt ervoor dat je onderdeel bent van je groep; het is een uiterlijk kenmerk waarmee men ziet waar je vandaan komt, wat je beroep, welstand, geloof en geslacht is. Tegelijk zorgt dit traditionele kostuum ook voor hiërarchisch onderscheid tussen mensen, het is een keurslijf met soms beperkte keuzemogelijkheden.
In 2013 stierf op Urk de laatst overgebleven draagster van de authentieke streekdracht, er is niemand meer die deze dracht dagelijks draagt. Wat gebeurt er met een streekdracht als deze geen authentieke dragers meer heeft? Staat het vrij om ermee te doen wat we maar willen?
Met deze outfits bevraag ik de sociale codes binnen de streekdracht van Urk. Door te spelen met diens materiaal, details en context biedt ik nieuw perspectief op identiteit binnen Nederlandse tradities. Hoe zou een moderne streekdracht passen in de wereld van nu?
